Positioning Your Business as an Employer of Choice

March 23, 2021
Smiling Team

Whether you are a small business or a multi-million dollar company, having a reputation where you are known for taking care of your people has never been more important to the Job Seeker than it is today.  The pandemic, unfortunately, resulted not only in health and safety concerns that many company’s weren’t prepared to deal with, but also the need for Employers to look internally and find some way to save money during this difficult time.

Sadly, the easiest solution for most Employers was to lay off a large portion of their work force.  However, there were a select group that took this opportunity to look inward and try to save money in ways that did NOT involve mass layoffs, and instead found ways to take even better care of their people.

You may think that the job seeker has assumed that you have implemented certain safety measures since many of them are government mandated, but the plain and simple fact is that every single business out there does not have the same requirements.  Also, different Job Seekers have different levels of comfortability and expectation when it comes to safety during these difficult times.  Even in the job posting created for a new role, be transparent about the things you are doing internally to keep both your employees and customers safe. This will clearly show Job Seekers that you take the health and safety of your people seriously.

Depending on the size and scope of your business, the type of Benefits Program you have may vary from others in the area, whether they are your direct competition or not.  The fact of the matter is, now more than ever, having some sort of Employee Benefits Program is extremely important to Job Seekers.  Whether you have a comprehensive Benefits Package or simply a Health Care Spending Account, promoting this via your social media and even in any job postings you may be running, will send a clear message that your people are a top priority in your business.

With the mass layoffs that took place in 2020, many people were just grateful to have A job during these challenging times.  Now that things are starting to settle down a bit and return to some semblance of normalcy, people who are active in the job market value the potential to grow and STAY with a company more than ever before.  It’s important to note that growth does not always have to mean vertical movement.  If the position you are hiring for doesn’t offer the ability to transition into something bigger down the road, that’s OK.  If you can’t promote the vertical growth piece, try highlighting tuition reimbursement for continuing education or the ability for someone to develop their position by taking on additional responsibility or larger accounts/projects, etc.  The key here is to highlight the fact that, if they join you, they will be a valuable part of the team long-term and you are prepared to invest in their future.
