Navigating Remote Work With Furry Friends

May 25, 2021

Meet Your Newest Co-Worker

Our pets are our best friends. They are just what we need when we get home from a long day of work. In 2021, remote work has changed the traditional owner-pet dynamics, and now the "coming home" excitement looks a little bit different. Instead of looking forward to seeing your furry friend after a long day in the office, you now have a fluffy new co-worker. Your ever-presence might be a welcome change for you and your pet, but it is still a massive shift for both of you. Pets, especially dogs, are often in tune with your emotional state. Any stress you are experiencing through your workday can impact how stressed your pet is. It's essential to set our fur-workers up for success by setting up a routine for them. Pets do better when they have a daily routine, and honestly, we do too. What might that routine look like? Let's discuss.

Pet Work from Home Station

A Work From Home Station for Them

Most pets have found a comfy corner in your bedroom or the pillow cushion on the couch that they have called their own.  It's important to set your pet up with their own space within your WFH setup to make them comfortable.  Create a WFH station for your pet.   Consider getting them a new cozy bed.  Pair this with their food and water bowls and a toy (non-squeaky, that is), and you will create a space that's close to you, which will give them comfort and calm during your Zoom calls.

Stay Active

Stay Active Together

One of the most significant benefits of WFH is getting up from your desk and taking lunchtime walks with your pet.  Doing this daily will establish a routine your pet will learn, remember, and predict.  The key is to change up the routes and allow your pet to explore new neighborhoods or pathways.  Give them mental stimulation during your walk, and in turn, you will be able to commence your afternoon workload in peace while the rest.  That fresh air will also help you to be more productive for the remainder of your day – bonus!

Play Date

It's a PLAY Date

To stay in a good work rhythm, set aside time in your day to play with your pet (but be sure to check your pet's availability before scheduling).  It is easier to set aside 15-20 minutes of your workday specifically for pet play time than it is to randomly play for a few short minutes multiple times a day.  Your pet will catch on quickly if you respond every time they do something cute, which could quickly become a problem as they take every possible chance to distract you. Your pet is used to getting your attention when you're home, and that suddenly changing will be confusing for them.  Dedicating time each day to give them the attention they need will create a new ritual your pet will look forward to and take comfort in.

Practice Leaving the House

Practice Leaving the House

When COVID eventually ends, you will likely have to return to the office.  Your pet's little heart will break at the thought of your leaving them all day without you. They might even develop some type of separation anxiety.  It is crucial to continue leaving the house while working from home, even if it's to do activities where you usually bring your pet.  For example, go for a walk without them once a day. Practicing alone time will help your pet to remain okay with you coming and going, much like you did before the pandemic.  Setting your pet up for success when the time comes to return to the office is key to you feeling less guilty and them feeling more comfortable.  The reunion at the end of each workday will become sweeter as the anticipation grows again.
