Getting the Most From Your LinkedIn Profile

February 9, 2021
Over the last few decades, the way we look for work has dramatically changed. Gone are the days when you would go from business to business and apply directly with your resume (even moreso with the current pandemic!) These days, everything is online and managing your online presence through the various social media channels, along with finding the best way to use the tools available to you are paramount when you are conducting a modern job search.

With that in mind, check out the Top 3 Tips from our resident HR Expert, Sabrina Reid for getting the most out of your LinkedIN profile:

1. Add your Headshot

  • Profiles with headshots stand out significantly more than a faceless icon, period. The focus should be you, with a neutral background and the best lighting possible.
  • PRO TIP: Don’t be afraid to get creative with a photo that shows your personality, aligns with your industry or what you do, but always remember: you only get one chance to make a first impression!

2. Highlight your Experience

  • An updated and accurate profile goes a long way to telling your professional story. You’ll want to pay special attention to highlighting the impacts you’ve made, the changes you put in places, initiatives you led, results you’ve delivered, etc. in each of your roles.
  • PRO TIP: All that attention to detail goes out the window if your work history looks as though you are presently employed at every company you’ve worked at. So when you transition to a new role or company, make sure you update the dates accordingly.

3. Start Connecting

  • Having a profile on the site is one thing, but USING it to passively or actively look for work is another altogether. Start with people you know, people you have worked with, or met in a professional capacity. First, second, and third-degree connections have value, it helps keep you visible to others.
  • PRO TIP: If you are reaching out to someone that you don’t know directly or maybe you haven’t connected with in a while, add a personal note to your connection request. This will dramatically increase the likelihood that they will accept your connection request and help you build your network that much faster.
